About Jacky Walker
I am an experienced counsellor, psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer. I have been in practice since 1993 and offer appointments in Norwich NR6, Norwich NR1 and King's Lynn. Coming soon: Online Counselling.
I am a UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy) registered psychotherapist and a BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) Senior Accredited counsellor. I am also registered with the UKRCP (the UK Register of Counsellors / Psychotherapists).
My qualifications include a Diploma and MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy; a Diploma, Advanced Diploma and MA in Counselling; and a Certificate in Supervision. I have been working with and practicing Mindfulness-Based approaches since the early 1990's, and have also completed a course in MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. I have also trained in NLP, Focusing, Mediation and Groupwork, amongst many other things.
I am currently updating my skills through an Evidence-Based CBT course, which follows the recommendations of NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Guidelines) and the IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) programme.
I have a particular interest in working with
- stress, burnout and work-life balance (with a special emphasis on the particular needs of high achieving professionals and people in the creative arts)
- quality of life issues (including mid-life crisis, life goals and spiritual values)
- the creative process
- getting the most from life through personal / professional development.
The combination of skills I offer is fairly unique in Norfolk, and I am probably the leading practitioner locally on stress, burnout and work-life balance.
I am a co-founder of Eastern Tree Training and Therapy. I have also been a board member for the Association of Humanistic Psychology in Britain and on the management committee of the One-to-One Project in King's Lynn (which offers counselling and befriending). For 5 years I headed the Counselling training programme for Norfolk Adult Education, developing courses at Introductory, Certificate and Diploma levels.
How I work
Counsellors and psychotherapists are trained to help you explore areas of concern in your life without judging you or advising you what to do. I work from a humanistic, cognitive and integrative approach, which means my first priority is to gain an understanding of how things seem from your point of view, since each person is unique, and contains an inner potential for self-healing and growth. My approach includes working at the level of thoughts, feelings, habits and behaviours, body and soul, as appropriate for each individual.
We each have our part to play in this process, both of us seeking to understand and explore your current concerns. I do not see myself as 'the expert' with all the answers, but will support you in finding what is right for you. My approach is tailored to what fits each person best, so I can range from being quite proactive, ('CBT friendly') with a fair amount of input from me, through to fairly receptive, leaving plenty of time and space for you. My approach has at its core the very latest advances in Cognitive Therapy, which recognises mindfulness as a key component of successful therapeutic work.
